University of Nottingham

I would like to visit The University of Nottingham which is a public research university based in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England, United Kingdom. It was founded as University College Nottingham in 1881 and was granted a Royal Charter in 1948.

Several of its subjects have been consistently ranked in the top ten, including economics, law and pharmacy. It is ranked 5th in the UK in terms of the number of students and 15th for the proportion of students who achieved AAB+ at A-level.

Reflection on the term

The modules I am studying within my subject:

Currently, I am studying business and management foundation course at Bellerbys College. This course involves three main modules which are Accounting , Economics and CIT. In addition to studying English skills and IELTS. All these subjects are focusing on providing the basic knowledge that students need in order to start their course in universities. In the next term, I will continue studying Economics 2 and English skills ( FES ) as well as studying Business math and Business studies.

How the different subjects I am studying compare with each other:

Although these entire subjects are related to the business sector, It is clear that each field involves different tasks. For example, Accounting focuses on how the businesses work by organising and keeping the financial accounts. During the account class, we learned how to prepare the financial statement such as income statement and balance sheet. These statements can provide businesses with the important information in order to keep it on the right track. On the other hand, Economic studies are the science of analysing the production of goods and services by understanding causes and effects .Moreover, the CIT module enables us to link our business studies with the technology by using Microsoft programs such as Word and Excel in order to manage figures and information to make the work more convenient. In addition, English skills module is one of the essential subjects   which provide us with the required method to improve our English. Learning how to take notes and summaries information can be assisted through our studies in university. During the IELTS class, we learn the required methods in order to obtain a good result in the exam. And focusing on four main skills which are listening , writing , reading and speaking .

There is no doubt that studying abroad in Bullerbys College create a significant impact on my life. Living away from my family makes me become more independent and raise my responsibility. Another positive aspect is making me able to manage my own finance which helps me to increase my awareness of using the money.in addition , I believe that studying here has improved my ability to adapt and deal with unexpected circumstances. All these skills that I gained can assist me with my further studies in the university.

What I have learned about myself during the term so far:

During this term, I have improved many important skills. English skills lessons have developed my language and that makes me become more confident while speaking to others. In addition to learning how to write well following some structures. Managing and organising are essential skills too, therefore, I learned how to plan my time effectively.

Understanding the economics was a real challenge for me since it is the first time that I study this subject. However, I tried hard to overcome any problem I face by reading some economics books and asking my teacher to help me whenever I face difficulties. Another important thing that assists my studying is not being only depended on what the teacher says in class ,but also expand my knowledge by reading more about what I already learnt.

I am very glad to be a student in Bullerbys College. Because I had the opportunity to meet many friends. Being in a class which have varies nationalities has many advantages and the main benefit is making me open to others cultures and ways of life.

the CIT classes at Bellerbys

There is no doubt that computing and information technology has become an essential subject which is related to business studies. The reason behind studying CIT is to keep up with technology by using computers which improve the way business operate. Moreover , computers make organising files and tracking them much convenient.

The purpose of this course is learning how to use Excel program in order to organise information and figures which allow us to do work much faster to save time and effort. In this course, i learned how to make formulas in Excel such as SUM, AVERAGE , MAXIMUM, MINIMUM and IF. These formulas lead to increase the accuracy of the data. I also learned how to convert information into different charts that make us able to notice the differences between the figures and choosing the best option. I really like the fact that Excel is not just numbers, but it does relate to everyday life. Moreover,we taught some basic information of Microsoft Word such as changing the font type and its colour. In addition, learning the keyboard shortcuts.

The things that I found some difficulty in it is managing time. At the beginning, There was no enough time to complete all the task given, but by the time I managed to do the work as fast as I can.

my Foundation English classes at Bellerbys

English course is one of the essential subjects which I study at Bellerbys college. studying English will not only help me to communicate with others but also pave the way for me to study and understand my business course easily.

it is true that the academic English might be harder than the general one for the reason that it use a formal language with an academic vocabulary. in addition , it has to be well structured. However, general English is thought to achieve a high standard of everyday English and learning communication skills .

Bellerbys English course has improved my language. Summarising is an important skill which any student have to learn it because it can help to save time by focusing only on the essential things, in this course I learned how to summarise texts by understanding the main idea of it . moreover, taking notes and organise it become much easier for me which helped me in the other subjects . Also learning how to compare and contrast between things by knowing their advantages and disadvantages. We learned how to describe a process which helped me in the terms of listening and writing .

What I really enjoy during the class that we have the chance to discuss and contribute to others from different countries. And not only focusing on the English skills but involving business language in any text showing the links between subjects .

english

the main subject that I am studying at Bellerbys.

After finishing an English course in Portsmouth I decided to study a business foundation in Brighton Bellerbys College.

The reason behind choosing to study business and management course is to be more confident in dealing with many people. Moreover, I will learn how to solve problems, make decisions and think more logically. In addition, business is very important to society because without it countries could face a financial crisis and may not know how to deal with it.

My course contains 4 main subjects namely Accounts, Economics, CIT and English skills. I understand that Accounts studies are important for any institution because it keeps their financial accounts. I learnt how important is to make a double entry bookkeeping which can use to know how the company is doing compared to other companies and whereas a company makes profits or not.Moving on to the Economics ,I studied what is the basic economic problems and how society deals with the scarcity of the resources of land, labour , capital and enterprise. What I found difficult in Economics is analysing economics situation which needs more practice to deal with. In CIT I knew how to use Excel program in order to write figures easily using some formulas.

I am starting to read more books on business to increase my knowledge which can help me through my studies.

Studying in my country and in the UK

The education system can change depending on the culture. Therefore, there is a huge difference in studying system in the UK and Oman.

One significant difference is the timings of a school day. The UK schools start at 9 am to 4 pm, however, the schools in Oman last from 7 in the morning to 2 afternoons. Another aspect is the teaching system; each school in Oman has 8 classes with a break between them last for 45 minutes. The student taught Arabic, English, Math, Science, Society and Citizenship, Sport, History, Geography, Art, Religious education and Music. Moreover, there are two terms in each year except the private schools that have 3 terms in a year. In Oman, students tend to have an assignment every day for each subject. Therefore, teachers can follow the progression of students. On the other hand, the UK schools operate a three-term school year, each term divided in half. The subject and the workload are quite similar to the one in Oman. The class size average in both of Oman and the UK is around 30 students. In my opinion making friends is similar around the world. Students tend to have same friends in and outside their schools and that because most of them share the same neighbourhood.

first impressions of the UK

I was very enthusiastic about studying abroad and each time people talk to me about the UK they mention How wonderful this place is.When I first  arrived in London I remember that I couldn’t stop looking at the brilliant design of the building and taking photos of everything to show my family and my  friends. I was really excited even though it was the long journey  which took us 7 hours from Dubai to London on the plane and almost 2hours in London Heathrow Airport. I was a little bit nervous about living in a new place, but the landscape along the way to Brighton was amazing which makes me stop worrying and start to relax.

When I first arrived in Brighton I noticed that people here love art, I saw lots of incredible graffiti artwork in the streets, I thought it will  be boring to live here, but I found out that it is completely different than what I had imagined. What’s really attract me here is the stunning sea, especially in sunset time.  There is a variety of things to do that makes Brighton special.

Since I was  young I was interested in geography, everything about environment takes my attention. So, I decided to study Something related to it which is Disaster Management. I am planning to take this  course in The university of Manchester after finishing a foundation year in Brighton. So after I graduate I hope to get a job in the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority in my country or getting a job in a private company.
